Become A Doula With An Agency in Colorado, Doula FAQ
Become A Doula at Colorado Mountain Doulas

During your doula training, you may or may not have heard about the option of working for a local doula agency to help you get your business up and running. At Colorado Mountain Doulas, we are almost always looking for new, professional doulas to add to our team. If you’re curious about what that might look like, check out the frequently asked questions below. If you have a question that you have not seen here please ask your question in the comment section below.  I will answer it, and add it to the list! Have a great day!

Q1: Why do I need an LLC or other business entity to apply?
A1: In the state of Colorado, contractors are required to be “customarily engaged in an independent trade, occupation, profession or business related to the work performed”. The easiest way to prove this is with a valid business. Also, it lets me know that you are a serious business person who is not doing this work as a hobby and will uphold the highest standards of care for your own clients, as well as agency clients.

Q2: I offer additional services that are complementary to doula work. How are additional services handled if the agency clients want those?
A2: Clients looking for additional services are matched with doulas who provide those services under the agency. The amount you are paid for those services is detailed in your contract with Colorado Mountain Doulas. If a client asks for a service that is not offered through the agency, reach out and we’ll talk about whether we mutually agree to offer those services under the agency or whether that is outside of the agency’s scope, and you should offer the service through your business.

Q3: Can I work for other agencies?
A3: YES! Absolutely, per Colorado contractor laws you should be working for multiple agencies and taking your own private clients. This is contract work, take the jobs you are offered, when you are offered them. I would never stand in the way of you feeding your family. (I do it too)

Q4: Can I continue to work for myself?
A4: 100% Professionalism and organizational skills are key here. Make sure you don’t take on too much, that you always have a backup for private clients and that you access your agency backups to make sure all clients are always well cared for and you are never leaving one client to serve another.

Q5: How do I begin working for Colorado Mountain Doulas?
A5: There are 5 steps needed to become a CMD.

  1. Apply, this puts you into my system so I can keep track of your info. I am an active working doula, just like you, so this application gives me the chance to get to know you a little better, even if I’m with clients of my own, and hopefully move on to the next step.
  2. You will receive one of two emails from me. An invitation to interview, with a link to schedule the interview, OR an email explaining why you may not meet the qualifications, or why we are not currently hiring. If you qualify, but we’re not hiring, your information will be kept on file for the next time we are in need of doulas.
  3. Interview! Come with your A-game. This is a job like any other. Be prepared to tell me about your qualifications and why you’re an excellent doula that the rest of the team can depend on. Ask me about how all of this works, but I expect you to do your homework. I hope you read here first.
  4. If all goes well, you will receive a contract from me detailing how we will work together, how you will be paid, and what it means to be a contractor. We already went over this in the interview, so please sign right away. It’s simple and electronic, and I’ll countersign in.
  5. Next, use your onboarding checklist to upload and/or sign all of the required documents and keep in close contact with me if some of it is taking time, but don’t wait too long. You could be missing out on contracts.
