You’re expecting a bundle of joy and doing all of your research…
Safest prenatal vitamins, where to buy maternity clothes in Denver, and of course, the best doulas in Denver…but how do you find the best OB-GYN in Colorado? When it comes to the safety of you and your baby during pregnancy and delivery, nothing but the top shelf provider will do. You may be tempted to hop onto your local Facebook mommy group and type in “who is the BEST OB-GYN in Denver?” But that’s not going to work super well. Here’s what we can tell you…
All OB-GYNs Are Not the Same
When you ask fifty different people for their opinion on who is the best OB, you will get fifty different answers – and they will all recommend their OB for totally different reasons. (“Because she looks like my grandma”, one commenter offered)
The truth is, there is no one “best OB-GYN in Colorado”.
There is only the best OB-GYN FOR YOU.
So here are some questions you need to ask yourself. They are simple, and will give you the insight you need to find the perfect OB-GYN for your unique needs.
1. Do I prefer a male or female doctor?
Some people have a strong preference of whether a male or female doctor provides their gynecological exams and prenatal care, and if so that is totally okay.
2. What type of birth am I planning to have?
If you wish to have an unmedicated, hands off water birth, you need to find a doctor who is not just okay with that, but actively supports that and has experience routinely attending those type of births. If you are high risk and may need to have a Cesarean birth, you need to find an experienced surgeon with a calm bedside manner who saves lives in the operating room every day!
3. Where will I be delivering my baby?
You’ll need to make sure your OB-GYN has delivery privileges there.
4. How far am I willing to drive for appointments?
Check to see if your OB-GYN has multiple office locations. If not, you’ll need to look for a specific OB-GYN in Colorado Springs, Denver, Pueblo, or wherever you are particularly located.
5. What kind of bedside manner do I prefer?
This is actually one of the most important ones, as a good rapport with your doctor will help you through a lot of other possible situations and difficulties. Are you looking for someone who jokes around, or takes your care seriously? Are you looking for a sister-type of doctor your own age, or a grandfatherly type?
6. Does the OB-GYN office accept my insurance?
Depending on your insurance coverage, some providers or birthing locations may not be options, so find out if there is a list you would need to choose from before interviewing anyone.
Now that you have a clearer picture in your mind of what type of OB-GYN would be perfect for YOU, go ahead and knock yourself out posting on social media for recommendations! Even better, ask your doula to make you a personalized recommendation – they’ve had the opportunity to witness a wide variety of providers and birthing situations and may have some great insight for you.
The next step is to schedule an in-person visit to make sure you’re happy with your choice. Many OB-GYN offices will let you schedule an initial consultation to determine if you’d like to initiate care. Or if not, you can just have your first prenatal meeting, decide if you’re satisfied, and if not you can switch to a new office. It’s all up to you!
If it’s a match made in heaven, you’ll feel so much peace of mind being able to put your safety into your awesome doctor’s hands. Now, back to choosing a nursery palette…
If you found the best OB-GYN in Colorado for YOU, leave a shout-out to them and tell us why you felt that way!
