To Swaddle or Not to Swaddle…….Why is it a Question?

Let’s talk about one of the many magical secrets of Colorado postpartum doulas, newborn care specialists and night nannies…………SWADDLING.

The act of swaddling newborns has been going on for as long as babies have been being born. Wrapping a sweet little newborn up in snug, soft cloth has many benefits. Swaddling can calm a fussy baby faster than any other form of comfort. It can also help a baby sleep deeper, and for longer stretches.

Trying to Google important information about swaddling can be a daunting task. Everywhere you turn you’ll find information on both the pros and cons. More and more we’re hearing from clients that either the hospital or their pediatrician is no longer recommending swaddling. Why is that?

The biggest reason that some hospitals and pediatricians no longer recommend swaddling is that most parents are not taught how to actually swaddle a baby. Even if they are taught in the hospital, new parents are tired, sometime delirious. Going home with a new baby and trying to remember exactly what you were told about proper swaddling can be a little difficult.

Just like anything else in life, knowing the correct way to do something can make all the difference when it comes to safety. Below are a few wonderful swaddling videos by my friends at Doulas Northwest and Music City Doulas. A few expert tips:

  • Make sure the swaddle is snug enough that it does not become loose or unwrap and travel up near baby’s face
  • Always place a swaddled baby on their back
  • Make sure that baby’s legs have room to move and flex
  • Un-swaddle baby during wake times and for breastfeeding (skin to skin is best)
  • Always use a pacifier during naps and at bedtime
  • Make sure baby is not overheated by using a light blanket specifically for swaddling or a commercial well-fitted swaddle.
